Obattarion is based on a Japanese pun about the word for old woman and the Japanese title for the movie The Return of the Living Dead.

The pun was used for the title of the manga Obatarian, but it is not known whether the pun existed beforehand and the manga was named after it, or if the demon is named after the manga.
