Mimir is a god of knowledge in Norse mythology renowned for his wisdom and a close ally of Odin, often appearing in myth to provide council to Odin. In the Heimskringla, the warring Æsir and Vanir agree to exchange hostages in order to prevent further hostilities with the Vanir sending Njörðr and Freyr while the Æsir send Hœnir and Mimir. Mimir is able to provide great council to the Vanir, however when Hœnir appears at an assembly of leaders without Mimir he only every says "let others decide". Feeling cheated by the hostage exchange, the Vanir decapitate Mimir and sent his head to the Æsir. Odin embalmed the head and cast various spells so that Mimir would be saved from death. Odin then kept Mimir's head at all times so Mimir could provide wisdom and council to him.
