Origin

A dragon is a hostile reptilian creature in European folklore, evolving out of folklore of giant serpents into a distinct creature by the Late Middle Ages.

Large serpentine creatures are a feature of folklore worldwide, and "dragon" is often used generically as a translation of various terms. An example is the lóng of China, though this is purely superficial and the European dragon and lóng have little in common.
