Nomenclature
A tomesode is a formal kimono with short sleeves and a design only along the bottom. The name, meaning fastened sleeves, originates from the practice of cutting the longer sleeves of a furisode after marriage. Furisode are to be worn by unmarried women, but cutting the sleeves allows one to reuse a furisode and continue wearing it. A black tomesode, as Yukiko wears, is also considered more formal than a colorful one.
