Ayane was a test subject for her father, Keisuke Komatsubara, in his attempt to dominate the human unconscious. She realized she was a symbol of sin and threw herself from the helicopter, but she was not accepted by Whale because of the Fukugō Persona in her body. She tried to take revenge on the Kanzato couple, who experimented on her, but they protected her instead. Returning to her senses, she wiped out her Fukugō Persona, but triggered a mass Apathy Syndrome.[1]

Novel Appearances
To grant her own wish to die by merging with the Whale, she stays between consciousness and unconsciousness, fulfilling the wishes of others, except for Ryo Kanzato.[2] She helps Touma Shikura to fulfill his wish to meet Saki Tachibana once again.[3] To grant Jun Kanzato's wish of being alone, she sends Jun's consciousness to the Whale.[4][5] To grant Shin Kanzato's wish to know the truth, she shows him a vision of what happened that night.[6] Since Yuki Kanzato's wish to go on a date with Shin was fulfilled as a byproduct of granting Jun's wish, she instead revives Jun, who had sacrificed himself at Marebito's hideout.[7]
Trivia
She already died physically ten years ago, leaving only her spirit behind. However, by connecting with the Whale, she was able to travel to an alternate world and could appear as the person she would have grown into.[8]
