Profile
Origin
Alfhild, latinized as Alvilda and sometimes anglicized as Alwilda, is the name of a legendary Scandinavian figure who would have supposedly lived in the 5th century. She was first attested in the Gesta Danorum ("Deeds of the Danes"), a Latin text composed in the late 12th century and early 13th century by Saxo Grammaticus which purports to detail the history of Denmark, though much of its contents are based on legends and folklore and are not supported by the historical record.
According to the Gesta Danorum, Alvilda was the daughter of Sywardus, king of the Goths, said to be so modest that she always covered her face with a veil, and her chamber was guarded by a viper and another snake to protect her chastity. She was to be betrothed to Alf, a son of Sywaldus, king of the Danes, under the condition that any suitor be able to kill the two snakes. Alf slew them successfully, but Alvilda, under the influence of her mother, rejected Alf and fled in men's clothes and became a pirate, recruiting other young women along with a group of pirates whose leader had died. Alf, himself a pirate, engaged in a battle with Alvilda before recognizing her, and he embraced her and compelled her to stand down and to wear women's clothes. They had a daughter named Guritha.[1]

Nomenclature
The localized name Awilda is a misspelling of the anglicized form Alwilda that appears to have spread via the Internet via a Wikipedia article, which may have been taken from the Project Gutenberg digitization of The Pirates Own Book by Charles Ellms (the original print version spells it Alwilda).
Alvilda is a latinization of the Norse name Alfhildr, meaning "elf battle". In modern Danish her name is spelled Alvild.[2]
The Chinese version's spelling appears to derive from a variant Alvida.
