Profile

Origin

Aiwass is a deity that dictated The Book of the Law to Aleister Crowley on three occasions in April 1904, making it a deity within his religion, Thelema. It is therefore the progenitor of Crowley's libertine philosophy and ideals. When introduced, it is said to be a minister of Hoor-paar-kraat, also spelled Harpocrates:

Behold! it is revealed by Aiwass the minister of Hoor-paar-kraat. [1]

Aiwass is said by Crowley to be a being of alien and superior intelligence to himself, and a sort of guardian angel to him. Its mother is said to be Nuit, or in other interpretations, Aiwass is merely a manifestation.[1][2] Despite its importance, Aiwass is only mentioned by name in The Book of the Law once, the rest being allusions.[1]
