Profile
Origin
Adam Kadmon,[a] lit. "Primordial Man" also referred to as Adam Ila'ah[b] ("Heavenly Man"), is a supreme, primordial figure in Kabbalah representing the initial manifestation of divine light prior to the creation of the physical cosmos. In classical Kabbalistic theology, particularly in the Zohar, Adam Kadmon is distinguished from Adam HaRishon ("the first man" of Genesis), functioning as the spiritual blueprint or macrocosm of the entire created universe.
In the 16th-century Lurianic Kabbalah formulated by Isaac Luria (the Ari), Adam Kadmon occupies a central role in the divine creation myth. Following the initial contraction of the infinite divine light (Ein Sof) into a vacant space (a process known as tzimtzum), divine light flowed into the empty void (tehiru) to form Adam Kadmon, the primeval human form. From the sensory orifices of Adam Kadmon, his eyes, nose, mouth, and ears, streamed further divine light intended to be captured by various vessels (kelim) to form the ten Sefirot. However, the lower vessels proved too fragile to hold the intense light and shattered, an event known as the "shattering of the vessels" (shevirat ha-kelim), which scattered divine sparks into the void and introduced evil and disharmony into the cosmos. Within this framework, the spiritual duty of humanity (Adam HaRishon) is to participate alongside Adam Kadmon in tikkun olam (cosmic repair or restoration), gathering the fallen divine sparks and restoring universe-wide harmony.
During the Renaissance and early modern period, Adam Kadmon became a central figure in Christian Kabbalah and Western esotericism. Figures such as Franciscus Mercurius van Helmont, in his 1684 work Adumbratio Kabbalæ Christianæ (appended to Christian Knorr von Rosenroth's Kabbala Denudata), integrated Lurianic concepts into esoteric philosophy. Van Helmont identified Adam Kadmon as the "protoplasmic" or eternal Christ, attempting to reconcile Lurianic cosmogony with Christian theology and positioning Adam Kadmon as a metaphysical bridge to the messianic restoration of creation. In modern occult traditions and Hermetic Qabalah (the school of Kabbalah designated with a "Q"), Adam Kadmon is interpreted as the archetypal human, representing the cosmic tree of life and the divine potential residing within humanity.
