Megami Tensei Gaiden: Last Bible is a 1992 role-playing game for the Game Boy, and the first entry in the Last Bible. It was developed by Multimedia Intelligence Transfer, published by Atlus, and released on December 25, 1992 in Japan. A remaster featuring updated graphics and an expanded story was released for the Game Gear on April 22, 1994. The original release was later ported to the Game Boy Color on May 19, 1999, which featured slightly updated graphics that made full use of the platform's color display. The Game Boy Color version was subsequently released in North America as Revelations: The Demon Slayer in August of the same year.

The Game Gear version of the game received a fan translation and was released on March 31, 2019.

Gameplay

Last Bible has a similar approach and aesthetic to conventional role-playing games, with the lead protagonist El traveling across a world map as he fights Demons (referred to as Monsters) and visits towns and dungeons along the way. Unlike previous Megami Tensei games that had a first-person perspective view, exploration in Last Bible is viewed from an entirely overhead perspective.

While venturing across the world map and in dungeons, El may encounter Monsters that he can either fight or attempt to Negotiate into joining his party. Last Bible has a simplified Negotiation, consisting of a series of predicable questions that El can only respond to with yes or no. Monsters will respond favorably to a certain order of responses, whereupon they will join El and can be called into his party. Including himself, El can keep a stock of up to 12 allies and can lead a full party of 6 at a time. Additionally, El can also send his allies to talk with Monsters, with the result being random.

Through fighting Monsters, El gains experience that will eventually level him up, allowing him to increase one of his stats by one point and potentially learn a new magic skill. At towns, the party are able to access a number of item and equipment shops as well as deposit banks and inns. The party's inventory can carry up to a limit of 28 items, including equipped items, requiring that items be periodically deposited at the bank or be sold. The inn is able to revive and recover the party for a fee per ally. If the party is wiped out, it will not result in a game over but instead transport them to the last inn used and their Macca halved.

As El progresses on his adventure, he eventually meets and allies with Kishe and Uranus. Kishe in particular possesses a special skill called Combine that lets him fuse two Monsters in El's stock anytime.

Version Differences

Game Gear

• The story was slightly expanded in the Game Gear version. An exposition explaining Orichalcum and Gaia was added to the pre-title screen. A Gaia Master ritual backstory was also added as part of the protagonists' naming sequence. The story is said to take place two years after the protagonists were chosen to become Gaia Masters at this ritual.
• Some event sequences were changed, requiring that the player visit certain areas or perform different tasks to proceed with the story.
• The graphics were given color. This version also features some completely redone graphics, most notably the demons and overworld.
• The Gear Game version features an unique original soundtrack.

Game Boy Color

• The Game Boy Color version is based on the original Game Boy release in content, and therefore lacks the new story content and sequences added in the Game Gear version.
• This version makes full use of the Game Boy Color's color display. The character and world graphics were also slightly updated.
