The Spirit Ketam
According to "Mah-Meri: Art and Culture" written by Roland Werner, the Ketam were once humans during the olden days, now cursed by the Moyang to become crabs. Then comes the Spirit Ketam. The Spirit Ketam enjoys the destruction of humans and eating them. It was later cursed by the Spirit and cannot eat humans anymore.
The Spirit Ketam Impai
In ancient times a pregnant woman wanted to eat the impai crab. Unfortunately her husband was unable to find it. The woman went to search for the impai crab and did not return. After seven days and seven nights, the husband searched for his wife. He was shocked to see that his wife became the impai crab. the husband swore, and thus till today the sound of birds can be heard at high tides.

Ketam shares its sprite with Cancer in every game it appears in, though its color palette is different. In Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei, Ketam is a red crab with green eyes and mouth. In Kyūyaku Megami Tensei: Megami Tensei I, the demon is light orange with red eyes, resembling a boiled crab. In Last Bible III it is a yellow and blue crab.
