Profile

Origin

Dark elves are a common trope in the fantasy genre. The term has an antecedent in the dǫkkálfar (lit. "dark elves") mentioned in Snorri Sturluson's Prose Edda who are said to live underground and be "blacker than pitch"; they are contrasted with the ljósálfar (lit. "light elves").

J. R. R. Tolkien's The Silmarillion, published posthumously in 1977, features the Avari, a group of elves who are called "Dark Elves" because they did not see the light of the Two Trees of Valinor.

In Dungeons & Dragons, dark elves are an evil subcategory of elves, and they are also known as drows; they first appeared in the module Hall of the Fire Giant King, released in 1978.

Kazuma Kaneko Works II mentions the Eddic dǫkkálfar, Dark Elves and Silvan Elves from J. R. R. Tolkien's The Silmarillion, and the dark elves of Dungeons & Dragons.[1]
