Dwarfs, also pluralized as dwarves due to the influence of J. R. R. Tolkien, are a class of being in Germanic tales and folklore who live in the mountains. Dwarfs are known for being skilled craftsmen, and in the modern conception are usually thought of as shorter than the average human, though this is not explicit in the original tales. In Old Norse, dwarfs are called dvergar.
