Origin
Marduk was the head god of the Babylonians. He displaced the earlier Mesopotamian deity Enlil as king of the gods during the rise of the Babylonian Empire. In the creation epic the Enūma Eliš, Marduk becomes king of the gods after killing Tiamat. He splits Tiamat's body into two, and the two halves become heaven and earth. After this, he creates humanity with his blood and bones.
Marduk was commonly known by the title Bēl, meaning "lord" and cognate to the Northwestern Semitic title Baal.
