Smirking can occur when hitting weaknesses, critting, nulling, draining, or repelling an attack, and the user is free of status ailments. Hitting a weakness gives a 30% chance of obtaining smirk per hit, while a critical is an 85% chance per hit. Smirking increases dodge rate to 85%, sets your attack power to +3 Tarukaja for the next attack, removes weaknesses, gives a 95% chance to crit for basic weapon attacks, and a 70% chance of crit for gun attacks. When all party members are smirking, a large amount of HP and MP is restored to all party members. Any action, including but not limited to, using skills, weapon or gun attacks, or passing, expends smirk.

Smirking occurs under the same conditions as in Shin Megami Tensei IV. Smirk can also be obtained by getting a first strike in a non-boss battle, and the frequency this occurs can be increased via Apps. Skills may also grant smirk. The effects of smirk, however, changed compared to Shin Megami Tensei IV. Smirk now guarantees hits and critical hits when attacking, regardless of element, as well as giving a 20% damage multiplier to any skill used. The guaranteed crit does not occur against smirking enemies. Like in Shin Megami Tensei IV, smirking removes weaknesses, but it no longer increases evasion rate or restores HP and MP for the party if all party members are smirking. Unlike in Shin Megami Tensei IV, smirk is only lost if the user attacks or is inflicted with a status ailment and lasts for at least one turn. The smirk icon will start blinking upon the turn it will expire, informing the player that if the smirking user does not attack, they will lose the smirk after the turn ends. Some skills have additional effects when used while smirking, like piercing, increased power, instakilling, or inflicting ailments.
