Profile
Origin
Sarutobi Sasuke[a] is a character in the Tatsukawa Bunko series of novels written by Tamada Gyokushūsai and Yamada Otetsu (under the pen name Sekka Sanjin) in the Taishō period. Books featuring Sasuke were the most popular books in the series, and the eponymous title Sarutobi Sasuke was published in 1914.[1] In the novels, he was raised amongst animals, learning acrobatics from monkeys.[2][b] He would join a group of retainers of daimyō Sanada Yukimura known as the Sanada Ten Braves, and he was ultimately killed by Tokugawa Ieyasu's forces in the Siege of Osaka in 1615.
Sasuke's popularity would help usher in a so-called "ninja boom" amongst the Japanese youths during the Taishō era.[3]
