Origin

A mujtahid is an individual in Islam who is qualified to interpret Islamic law through ijtihad. It is positioned in contrast to a muqallid, or one who simply defers to established interpretations. Mujtahid are considered to be scholars of Islam who have extensive knowledge of the Qur'an and legal theory.
