Profile

Origin

Qieci,[a] better known as Budai[b] (lit. "cloth sack") or as the Laughing Buddha,[c] was, according to Chan (Zen) Buddhist traditions, a Chinese monk during the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period. He is popularly believed in China and regions with Chinese cultural influence to have been an incarnation of the future Maitreya Buddha, whom Budai said often appears among the people unrecognized. Budai is commonly depicted with a large belly and holding a cloth sack.

In Japan, he became seen as one of the Seven Lucky Gods.
