Profile

Origin

Goliath[a] is a minor figure in the three major Abrahamic religions.

According to 1 Samuel 17, Goliath of Gath was a tall Philistine warrior who intimidated the Israelite army. The young David of Bethlehem (who would later become Israel's second king) defeated Goliath despite the odds being overwhelmingly against him, because his faith was in YHWH. Goliath's height varies depending on manuscript; he is stated to be four cubits and a span tall in one of the Dead Sea Scrolls (4QSama) and the Septuagint, but six cubits and a span in the Vulgate and the Masoretic text. Goliath's head and weapons were taken as a war trophy; Goliath's sword was kept in the Tabernacle and was later taken by David (1 Samuel 21:9).

Note that in 2 Samuel 21:19, a certain Elhanan of Bethlehem is credited as killing Goliath instead of David, and this takes place after David had already become king. 1 Chronicles 20:5 instead says that Elhanan slew Goliath's brother Lahmi. There are three main possibilities. The first is that there were two separate stories of the slaying of Goliath which existed in oral tradition, one with David and one with Elhanan, and both were included in 2 Samuel; the passage in 1 Chronicles would thus be a way of harmonizing the two traditions. The second is that there was a scribal error in the 2 Samuel passage. The third possibility, mentioned in some rabbinic commentaries (e.g. Rashi), is that Elhanan and David were the same person. Note that many English translations revise the 2 Samuel passage by adding "the brother of" before Goliath's name to match 1 Chronicles.

In addition to the biblical mentions, Goliath's battle with David is mentioned in the Qur'an in Surah 2:249-251.
