Pandora is said to be the first woman in the religion of the ancient Greeks, first attested in the Theogony and Works and Days written by Hesiod in the 8th century BC. Pandora was created by Hephaestus and given to Prometheus's brother Epimetheus as a bride along with a jar.[a] Pandora opened the jar (often referenced as a "box" in modern times) which released all the evils of the world, leaving only hope within the jar. Pandora's creation was intended as a punishment to mankind for Prometheus's stealing of fire as a gift to the human race.
