Origin
Yaoya Oshichi was the daughter of a greengrocer who lived during the early Edo period. Following a great fire that had forced her and her family to evacuate to a temple, she fell in love with a temple page. Oshichi later attempted arson in the hope of meeting her lover again, but was caught and burned at the stake as punishment.
