Origin
The Assassins were an order in Shia Islam that existed from 1090-1275 AD and were responsible for hundreds of deaths. The modern concept of an assassin comes from these historical Assassins, including their usage of daggers and poisons, as well as their targets, many of which were high-profile religious or political figures.
