The kanji for Yomi are borrowed from Chinese (Traditional Chinese: 黃泉, romanized Huángquán) and literally mean "yellow spring". The Chinese term originally referred to underground springs but was later applied to the underworld by extension. The spoken word Yomi is unrelated to its written kanji and may have originated from the Japanese 山 (yama, "mountain") in reference to mountains' use as burial places, or from 闇 (yami, "darkness").
