In Buddhism, the word Maitreya is used to describe the Buddha who will appear in the future.
Etymologically, the name Maitreya derives from the word for "friend," and is related to the name of the Indo-Iranian god Mitra.

An ancient Persian god of contracts, he was also revered as a sun god. At the end of time, he will descend from the heavens and raise the dead for final judgment. |
