Origin
Útgarða-Loki is a jötunn in the Prose Edda.
In the Gesta Danorum by the Danish writer Saxo Grammaticus, a similarly-named entity called Ugarthilocus[a] was worshiped by the Danish king Gormo. On behalf of the king, Thorkillus set off to see Utgarthilocus in his cave in order to ask what happens after death. In the cave, Ugarthilocus is said to have had his hands and feet bound in chains. Though he did not ask the question on the afterlife, Thorkillus pulled a hair from the chin of Ugarthilocus as proof of his journey. The hair is said to have had such a foul stench that several people died from the smell alone when Thorkillus presented it to Gormo.[1]
