Profile

Origin

A celestial fox[a] is a being in Chinese folklore. According to the Xuanzhongji[b] traditionally ascribed to Guo Pu,[c] a fox becomes a celestial fox when it has been alive for a thousand years. They are capable of communicating with heaven.[1]

Daoist immortal and teacher Ye Fashan,[d] of Kuancang,[e] explained Tianhu to Zai Chiming.[f] He described them as beasts that can communicate with heaven that appear during fasting periods. While they can be repelled, they cannot be killed. [2] Tang dynasty text Youyang Zazu[g] expands on this, stating that they appear with nine tails and golden fur, like Jiuweihu, but possess talismans, can understand the Yin and Yang, and serve in Sun and Moon Palaces.[h] Several stories tell of it healing weary travellers in post-Han texts.[3]

Design

Tianhu appears as a fox with purplish-gray fur and multiple tails.
