While Joker claims the Iris means "revenge", it's a subtle piece of foreshadowing to anyone who knows Hanakotoba (the Japanese art of flower language/symbolism) that this isn't true. Wikipedia's page on Hanakotoba gives the meaning of the Iris as "good news, glad tidings, loyalty" - and I can't find any other sources mentioning yellow irises specifically as having a negative association, in either Western or Japanese flower language.

Joker is trapped in deep delusion, mistaken about what happened to Maya. He claims revenge, but deep down, he's giving Tatsuya good tidings - greeting a long forgotten friend.

According to this sites, the meaning of Revenge is also included. It seems that's how it's perceived in Japan.[[1]] I'm not sure how to use the Talk page. I tried writing something similar.

The article cited by the text in question quotes Kaneko personally stating that irises represent revenge. Granted, I can't speak to how broadly understood this interpretation is, but regardless its very possible that it both represents revenge and serves as foreshadowing.
