During the Challenge Quest Please Help Ken, Ken steps in to mediate an altercation between two civilians and some Ashura-kai members. He notices Nanashi and Hallelujah watching the argument and asks the two to leave as this is his problem alone. As the Ashura-kai members attempt to excuse their extortion of the civilians, Ken scolds them for their impropriety and says their behavior reflects poorly on him too. One of the men tells him to shut up, to which Ken responds by beating them up. He watches the men run away and into Nanashi and Hallelujah, who also dish out a beating on the men. Afterwards, he restrains the three misbehaving grunts then asks why a Hunter showed up in the first place. When the younger civilian steps forward and admits he had been the one to make the call, Ken asserts he does not need any help. He also argues that it would not be fair to immediately write people off for their misdeeds, especially since he sees himself as no better than them. Ken then leaves, hauling the men away.

Ken reappears later in the Challenge Quest Help the People of Ikebukuro. As the residents of Ikebukuro descend into chaotic infighting at the hands of Shax, he attempts to stop the demon on his own but fails. Just as he collapses, he spots Nanashi and Hallelujah and echoes his previous sentiment: to leave it in his hands as it is his problem alone. However, he is unable to fight further, leaving the task of killing Shax to Nanashi and Hallelujah. Once the demon is felled, Ken regrets his prior mindset as it had almost wrought destruction onto Ikebukuro. He bows to Nanashi as a way to thank the boy for saving his life then endeavors to rebuild Ikebukuro with his new outlook.
