Picking a subtag to use on an article

Several codes are assigned to macrolanguages, which are broader language tags with more specific tags available. On Megami Tensei Wiki, how to handle this varies.

Always use a macrolanguage subtag
  • bua for Buryat
Usually use a macrolanguage subtag
  • For several macrolanguages, it is preferred to use the macrolanguage subtag unless the written form differs amongst the more specific languages, in which case said subtags should be used; macrolanguages like this include Akan (ak), Malay (ms), and Sanskrit (sa).
  • ar is preferred for Arabic. However, if one needs to compare Standard Arabic (arb) with other varieties of Arabic, more specific subtags may be used.
  • fa for New Persian should be used unless a term is specific to modern Iran (pes) or modern Afghanistan (prs). However, it is advised to give an Iranian Persian romanization in parentheses after the Classical Persian romanization using pes-Latn unless the romanization is identical.
  • zh for Chinese is preferred over the specific subtags cmn for Mandarin, ltc Middle Chinese, and yue for Cantonese unless a specific pronunciation is somehow relevant to the article.
Always use more specific subtags
  • Several macrolanguages are intentionally commented out or not present as more specific subtags are preferred in all cases, mostly due to scripts differing between the more specific subtags, and some due to the macrolanguage seemingly serving little practical purpose.
    • For Mongolian, give the Mongol script spelling with the cmg subtag for Classical Mongolian, and the Cyrillic spelling with the khk subtag for Khalkha Mongolian.
Does not have a macrolanguage
  • xct for Classical Tibetan should generally be used (romanized using Extended Wylie). If modern Tibetan is relevant (e.g. for things from the modern era), bo may be used instead.

Guide on adding language codes

First, check the IANA language subtag registry to see if the language exists in it and is not deprecated. Then add the language with the following attributes:

  • name: Language display name on the wiki
  • wikipediaArticle: Language Wikipedia article
  • defaultScript: Language default script
  • suppressScript: Include as true if the script should not be added as a subtag in the HTML lang attribute; this is to be used if Suppress-Script is included for the language in the IANA registry.
  • romanizedTag: IANA subtag for the romanization system, if it exists

Different language display name and Wikipedia article when using different scripts can be specified with name-Script and wikipediaArticle-Script, replacing "Script" with the actual script code.
