Maragion is a Demon produced by a glitch in Shin Megami Tensei, which later appeared as a character in the novel Shin Megami Tensei: Haikyo no Naka no Jin and its manga adaptation Shin Megami Tensei: Eden.

Profile

Design

In its original appearance as a glitch in Shin Megami Tensei, it is a recolor of the Hobgoblin with a missing tile on its right arm (where an axe is present on Hobgoblin). It has pink skin, a green loincloth, and yellow boots. This sprite appears to be a placeholder sprite of some sort, and is still present in the PlayStation version's data.

Shin Megami Tensei: Eden

Maragion is an artificial flame demon that was created by Raishin and Suzaki to guard the entrance to Eden, an underground shelter built by the Japanese government to repel demons and protect inhabitants from the outside world. When government officials tried to flee to Eden prior to the launch of nuclear missiles on Tokyo, an unnamed scientist who held a grudge towards the government modified Maragion's directive from defending Eden to eliminating anyone who approached it, leaving only piles of charred corpses.

The demon first appears to Jin as a helpless Hobgoblin, only to transform into its fiery appearance once Jin attempts to open the door to Eden. When scanned with a COMP, it shows the image of a Hobgoblin with dramatically increased stats. It is explained that since the demon is man-made it can't contain its own strength, and its excess energy flows out of the host demon to create the creature of flame. The demon is eventually defeated when Jin explodes a canister of coolant in its core, opening the gate to Eden in the process.

Trivia

Nomenclature

The name was not intentionally picked by the developers, and is the result of the game picking a text pointer outside of the range normally used for demon names. While it calls itself マハラギオン (Maragion) in its line of dialogue upon being fused, aside from that it is called せかいには なれだ or せかいには なれ depending on the menu,[1] which is a portion of the line of dialogue said by the Old Man after the Cataclysm.
