Profile

Origin

Sariel is a name of an angel in some Second Temple period Jewish writings, including the Book of Enoch and the War Scroll.

In the Greek version of the Book of Enoch, Sariēl is one of the seven holy angels who watch; the Ethiopic version instead has the name Saraqâêl.[1] In the Ethiopic version of Enoch, there is a fallen angel named Sariêl, who is mentioned to have been one of the leaders of the fallen angels[2] and to have taught humans the course of the moon;[3] the Greek version of Enoch instead calls this angel Seriēl.[2][3] In the Aramaic fragments, along with the mention amongst the seven holy angels, the angel Śārîʾēl is also mentioned in a few other locations where the Ethiopic and Greek have Uriel or Istrael as one of four angels along with Michael, Raphael, and Gabriel.[4] The fallen angel Sariêl/Seriēl is called Śahărîʾēl, meaning "moon of God".[5]

In the War Scroll, Sariel is one of four angels (along with Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael) whose name is to be written on the shields of tower soldiers.[6]
