This template is to be used for marking text as another language. See the IANA subtag registry for language codes.

This is most important for Japanese, Traditional Chinese, and Simplified Chinese so that a correct font is used, as some characters look different between the three but have the same Unicode code point. Marking it for other languages does have benefits for screenreaders, however.
