Origin
Salome was the daughter of Herodias, the wife of Herod Antipas, tetrarch of Galilee and Perea from 4 BC to 39 AD. According to the Gospel of Matthew and the Gospel of Mark, Herod told Salome (unnamed in the Gospel accounts) that he would give her whatever she would ask for. Salome went to her mother Herodias for advice, and Herodias, who had a dislike of John the Baptist for calling her marriage to Herod unlawful (as she had previously been married to Herod's brother Philip), told her daughter to ask for the head of John the Baptist. Herod reluctantly agreed because he had sworn in front of his guests.
