Death is a recurring Status Condition in the Megami Tensei franchise.
Profile
Death is the name often given to the state of a party member whose HP has been reduced to 0. In some titles, the death of the protagonist, all human characters, or a particular unit will immediately result in a game over. Demons who have died often immediately leave the party and return to the stock, and must be revived before they can be re-summoned. Death can also be instantly inflicted regardless of HP with the use of instant-death skills such as Mudo and Hama. Some skills, such as Recarmdra, also inflict death on the caster in exchange for a benefit to the party of some kind.

Last Bible Special
Death functions similarly to how it does in other titles. If Mattel dies, then it is considered a game over, regardless of the status of his party.
