Relics, also referred to as Mystic Relics, are recurring items in Shin Megami Tensei IV and Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse.
Profile
Relics are salvageable items valued for their curiosity or practical usage and are pawned at stores for Macca. In the Eastern Kingdom of Mikado, "Mystic Relics" refer to valuable artifacts that are foreign to the kingdom. This term is widely applied to various unusual objects and technology found in the "Unclean Ones'" country, including consumables[1] and weapons such as Guns.[2] Mystic Relics are highly sought after by the monks of the Monastery for research,[3] and they permit their appraisal and sale at the Aquila Plaza's stores.[4] When the Samurai are ordered to go into the Unclean Ones' country to find the Black Samurai, Isabeau suspects there is an ulterior motive behind this order to acquire more Mystic Relics for the Monastery.[5] This is later issued as an official order by Abbot Hugo to Flynn and his party.

In actuality, "Mystic Relics" are household goods that were once commonplace in Tokyo prior to the fall of civilization 25 years ago. The distribution and manufacture of these goods fell dramatically and in turn became a valuable resource to the people of Tokyo.[6] Relics are collected by Hunters to eke out a living and to supply the populace with salvageable resources. Some clients also task Hunters with retrieving certain kinds of Relics through the Hunter Associations.
In Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse, the denizens of Tokyo have begun to ironically refer to these items as "Mystic Relics" after adopting them from the visiting Samurai.[7]
Gameplay
This section is in need of research. | |
Reason: Research needed to determine how long it takes before Relic spots refresh. |
Relics are resale items that can be exchanged for Macca at any store, and are one of the few ways to make money in Shin Megami Tensei IV and IV: Apocalypse. Relics can be obtained by searching Relic spots found throughout the games' explorable areas, including the overworld. These spots are identified by their floating green marker, indicating a spot that can be searched for Relics. The type, rarity, and number of Relics found are randomized each search; however, certain Relics may be more commonly found in or isolated to certain areas. For example: in Shin Megami Tensei IV, low rarity Jewelry-type Relics are commonly found in Naraku and Kiccigiorgi Forest. Once a Relic spot has been searched, it cannot be searched again until a period of time has passed,[when?] which refreshes the Relic spot. Some Challenge Quests will also reward in Relics when completed.
Relics are initially unapprised when obtained and are solely categorized by their type and a rarity between 1 to 5 stars, with 5 being the rarest and having the highest resale value. They are automatically appraised and sold after review whenever the protagonist enters or interacts with a store. The kind of named Relics acquired from appraisal is randomly determined when entering a store. In Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse, the total value of Relics acquired is shown whenever Nanashi searches a Relic spot.
Some Relics are part of a Challenge Quest and are necessary to collect for the quest's completion. These Relics cannot be sold at stores.

Unapprised Relics
All unapprised Relics of the same type share the same initial description. The value portion in the latter description changes based on the Relic's rarity. From 1- to 5-Star rarity, the value descriptions in order are, "Has little value", "Has average value", "Has high value", "Rather rare", and "Very rare."
