Nomenclature
The kanji for Yomi are borrowed from Chinese (Lua error in Module:Translit at line 830: Language with code "Traditional Chinese" is not defined.) and literally mean "yellow spring". The Chinese term originally referred to underground springs but was later applied to the underworld by extension. The spoken word Yomi is unrelated to its written kanji and may have originated from the Japanese 山 (yama, "mountain") in reference to mountains' use as burial places, or from 闇 (yami, "darkness").
