Expertise is a mechanic in Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine.[1]
Overview
Expertise is one of the main progression systems in Imagine. It allows the player to learn skills and gain passive benefits by developing their proficiency in a given area.
Expertises are classified as Techniques or Knowledges. Knowledges only provide passive skills and benefits, while Techniques also provide active skills.
Expertises are managed through the Expertise menu, where the player can toggle whether or not they want to increase any given Expertise and see and learn skills from a given Expertise.
Points
Points are the numerical progress the player has in a given Expertise. By performing certain actions, an Expertise will gain points. An Expertise's Rank will increase every 100 points, and its Class will increase every 10 Ranks, or 1000 points.
The player can only invest a finite amount of points in Expertises, preventing them from fully developing every one. Should they reach their maximum amount of points, they will be unable to further develop Expertises. An Expertise's points can be lowered with certain items, allowing the player to re-invest them in other areas.
A character starts with a 17000 point maximum, which can be increased by the following methods:
- Every 10th level (10, 20, 30...) will increase the maximum by 1000.
- Level 99 increases the maximum by 1000.
- Certain quests increase the maximum by 1000 each.
- Increasing Digitalize levels for a given Race or group of Races increases Expertise by a variable amount.
Skill acquisition
Once an Expertise reaches a certain Rank, they will unlock a skill for the player to learn. Certain Ranks unlock multiple skills, and the player may need to choose to learn some, but not all of them. The amount that can be learned depends on the Rank and is indicated by a number next to the row of skills in the Expertise's menu. For instance, Destruction Magic 0-1 (Class 0, Rank 1) unlocks Bufu and Zio, from which the player can learn 2, so they can learn both, while Fusion 0-2 unlocks Fairy Fusion, Earth Element Fusion and Haunt Fusion, from which the player can learn 1, so they can only learn one skill of the three. Skills can be forgotten with certain items, allowing the player to change their selection.
If the player lowers their Expertise below the amount required to learn a skill, that skill will become unavailable until they reach the required point total again, but it is not considered forgotten.
Chain Expertise
Certain Expertises combine to unlock Chain Expertises. A Chain Expertise's progress depends on the Expertises required to unlock it: each base Expertise contributes a fraction of its points to the Chain Expertise. A Chain Expertise's points do not contribute to the player's Expertise limit.
