Cironnup (Also called Chironnup or Chironnupu in Japan) in the Ainu tongue translates to <nowiki>''Those who we kill many''</nowiki>. And it can be used to describe foxes in general, but also is referred to a type of Kamuy. It was revered and present in the culture of the Ainu people, the native people of the Hokkaido island, in the Japanese archipelago.

The Kamuy are a divine spirit, supernatural entity or even a god for the Ainu culture. This title can be attributed to many creatures and objects, and come from the idea that everyone and everything can have a soul. In fact, there's Kamuy for diseases, earthquakes, fauna, flora, and more. They can be good, bad, are many in numbers, they have families and lives, their own personalities and interests just like Humans. Cironnup-Kamuy is the fox deity in this context. Cironnup appears in many tales and are generally known to be a Kamuy that listens to people's requests, brings food, can protect against illness and foreign enemies. They can appear in premonitory dreams to warn about calamities. The premonitory nature Cironnup can also be seen at some regions, where people frequently used fox skulls as divination tools. They could also be used as guardians in boats that sailed for fishing.<ref name=":0" />

Cironnup design in the Shin Megami Tensei series is of a creature with pale small body with no visible features, like a ghost. It holds a bow and arrow in each hand, and its head seems to be made of carved wood and this texture ends in the snout, having colored pointed ears. His tongue is almost always outside his mouth in a cute demeanor. Cironnup has a released beta design, never used in the base games. This scraped design depicts the demon as a regular fox, with a blank stare and wearing traditional Ainu clothing.

According Masayuki Doi, the designer for Cironnup, the idea of the design for this demon came as they needed a mascot-like character.
