Magatama serve as both equipment that the [[Demi-fiend]] can equip by ingesting, replacing the standard equipment in previous ''Shin Megami Tensei'' games, as well as a means of teaching the Demi-fiend new skills. Magatama impart an increase to certain stats and elemental or status ailment affinities for as long as they are equipped; conversely, some Magatama will impart a weakness to certain elements or status ailments as well. A Magatama has a set of skills and/or traits that it can teach the Demi-fiend upon leveling up once he has reached a minimum required level. The required levels are not stated in-game, but are indicated by the Magatama glowing and shaking on the Magatama screen; the Magatama will glow brightest and shake wildly when a new skill is about to be learned on the next level. A Magatama's skill can only be learned once in a playthrough, if forgotten or not added when learned, that skill will become permanently lost to the Demi-fiend.
