Origin

Ōkuninushi, also known as Ōnamuchi and Ōanamochi among other variants, is a kami in Japanese mythology. He is a central figure in the mythological narratives recorded in the Kojiki (712 CE) and the Nihon Shoki (720 CE), where he appears alongside the sun goddess Amaterasu and her brother Susano-o, who is described as either his ancestor or father. Ōkuninushi is portrayed as the leader of the Kunitsukami, the earthly deities, and the original ruler of the terrestrial realm known as Ashihara no Nakatsukuni (葦原中国, the “Central Land of Reed Plains”). After the heavenly deities, the Amatsukami, demand control of the land, he relinquishes his authority and withdraws to the unseen realm (kakuriyo), while Amaterasu’s grandson Ninigi assumes rule, becoming the ancestor of the Japanese imperial line.

Ōkuninushi first appears in the Kojiki under the name Ōnamuji in the tale of the White Hare of Inaba. While traveling with his eighty brothers to court Princess Yakami-hime, he shows compassion to a flayed hare whom his brothers had deceived and mistreated. By instructing it to cleanse itself in fresh water and apply cattail pollen, he restores the animal’s skin. The hare, revealed to be a deity, prophesies that Ōnamuji will marry the princess. His brothers, resentful of this prediction, repeatedly attempt to kill him, but he is revived each time through the intervention of his mother, Sashikuniwakahime, and other deities.

Ōnamuji later journeys to Ne-no-Katasu-Kuni, where he meets Susano-o and falls in love with the latter’s daughter, Suseri-hime. Susano-o subjects him to a series of ordeals, including surviving among snakes and insects and retrieving an arrow from a burning field. With Suseri-hime’s assistance, he completes these trials and departs with her, receiving Susano-o’s blessing and the name Ōkuninushi. He then defeats his brothers and establishes rule over Ashihara no Nakatsukuni.

As ruler, Ōkuninushi is credited with the development and pacification of the land. In partnership with the dwarf deity Sukunahikona, he is said to have established agriculture, medicine, and various cultural practices. Through numerous marriages, he fathers many deities, including Kotoshironushi and Takeminakata, who later play roles in the transfer of the land to the heavenly gods.

The mythological event known as the kuni-yuzuri (transfer of the land) describes the heavenly deities’ demand that the terrestrial realm be ceded to them. After negotiations led by the warrior deity Takemikazuchi and consultation with his sons, Ōkuninushi agrees to relinquish sovereignty on the condition that a grand palace be constructed in his honor. He then withdraws to the unseen realm, and Ninigi descends to rule the earth.

Ōkuninushi is strongly associated with Izumo Province, now Shimane Prefecture, and the myths surrounding him are preserved in the provincial Fudoki as well as the imperial chronicles. He is enshrined at numerous Shinto shrines throughout Japan, most prominently Izumo Taisha, where he is venerated as the principal deity. Prior to the Meiji period, he was syncretized with the Buddhist deity Daikokuten under the broader amalgamation of Shinto and Buddhism.

Design

According to Kazuma Kaneko, Okuninushi’s design in Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne was intended to evoke a Japanese counterpart to the Irish hero Cu Chulainn. Kaneko stated that Okuninushi’s armor, which may appear dark, was meant to be depicted as a bright, polished silver. The black leather straps under his neck connect the his shoulder guards, because they are not connected to the rest of his body armor.
