Origin

Bifang[a] is a crane-like creature first mentioned in the Classic of Mountains and Seas,[b] residing in the Western Mountains. It is described as being a one-footed, green bodied, white-beaked, red-eyed crane that, when seen, will cause a local village to burn down. Its name is derived from the call it makes.[c][1] Sources tend to give differing descriptions of its appearance and associations; for example, Gao You[d] describes it akin to the Classic of Mountains and Seas, but adds that it does not eat grains.[2]

Hanfeizi[e] describes Huang Di gathering Bifang and Chi You on a Mount Tai.[3]

Design

The Bifang in Shin Megami Tensei matches the description of the Classic of Mountains and Seas, with the single foot, and the flame on its head representing the disasters that it brings when sighted.

鶴に似た姿で描かれる、一本足の鳥。彰我山Should read 章莪山[sic]という山に棲むといわれる。

ヒッポウという名は、この鳥の鳴き声にもとづくとも、燃える火の音からついたともいわれる。火の象徴である赤い羽と白いくちばしを持つ姿であらわされこともある。

ヒッポウが火をくわえて現れたなら、十分注意しないといけない。ヒッポウはその火を家々に放ち、村を焼き払おうとするからである。

A bird with a single leg depicted with an appearance like that of a crane. It is said to live on a mountain called Mount Zhang'e.

The name Bi Fang is said to come from this bird's cry or from the sound of burning fire. It is sometimes represented as having a form with red feathers and a white beak, symbolizing fire.

If a Bi Fang appears alongside fire, one must be very careful, because the Bi Fang will set fire to houses, trying to burn down the village.
