Gameplay

Athanor Cavern appears as the second dungeon in the game, accessible through Dolurae. It is the royal crypt of the now-defunct Athanor Kingdom, consisting of four basement floors, filled with traps such as pitfalls and floors that will spin Mattel around and disorient him.

Athanor Cavern is the tomb of King Athanor and Queen Alchemia, the rulers of the old Athanor Kingdom. Prior to the events of the game, Athanor was a prosperous nation, but fell into disarray after the rise of Gryas. At the time of Athanor and Alchemia's wedding, Gryas was already preparing to invade the kingdom; according to rumors in various towns, the influx of refugees from other lands that Gryas invaded had transformed Athanor from a wealthy nation to a defunct one.

Mattel enters the crypt during his journey towards Jerusalem and is faced with solving a riddle left by the old king and queen of Athanor, in which their effigy must be presented with the White Lily Flower and the Crimson Rose as a gift for their wedding. He must then disable a trap by solving yet another riddle in the burial chamber, in order to descend into the furthest point and conquer the spirit who haunts those who disturb the monarch's rest, Nigredo. Upon defeating Nigredo, Mattel can move onwards to Antioch.
