A Bao A Qu
A Bao A Qu is a Demon in the Megami Tensei franchise.
Profile
Origin
A Bao A Qu is a creature from Argentine writers Jorge Luis Borges and Margarita Guerrero's 1957 book Manual de zoología fantástica (Handbook of Fantastic Zoology), later retitled El libro de los seres imaginarios (The Book of Imaginary Beings) for its second edition in 1967. The book claims that there is folklore that A Bao A Qu, a translucent creature with tentacles that glows blue light, can be encountered on the stairs of the Tower of Victory in Chittor, India.[1][2] The book claims that this tale was recorded by Richard Francis Burton in his notes for his version of One Thousand and One Nights,[1] but this is untrue. The English translation by Norman Thomas di Giovanni, made in collaboration with Borges, changed it to claiming that a certain C. C. Iturvuru recorded it in an appendix to his "now classic" 1937 treatise On Malay Witchcraft,[2] but neither this person nor this treatise exist.
Design
In Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei, it uses the same sprites as Pink Looper but flipped upside down, causing it to resemble a blue jellyfish. In Kyūyaku Megami Tensei, it is a recolor of Pink Looper instead. In Devil Children Black Book and Red Book, it is a humanoid slime with a morning star for a head.
