Teddie is a character in Persona 4. He is also the mascot who is used to represent the game.
Profile
Teddie is a mysterious figure resembling a bear costume suit that the protagonist, Yosuke Hanamura, and Chie Satonaka encounter in the TV World. Teddie is unaware of who he is but knows the TV World as his home and remembers when it was a beautiful place. Lately, it has become more hostile, and someone has been dumping bodies in there, which Teddie wrongfully assumes is the protagonist and his friends. Teddie joins the group to assist them in the murder investigation, creates special glasses that allow them to see through the fog, and uses his nose to sniff out where the kidnapping victims are.
Teddie comes off as being young and impressionable, akin to a toddler. He speaks using his name as his pronoun, similar to many young children. He repeats words and learns things from what he experiences during his time with the Investigation Team, the most noticeable being how he picks up the Japanese phrase for girls hitting on guys from Shadow Yukiko.[a] Teddie takes an interest in girls after being pet on the head by Yukiko Amagi and begins trying to hit on her, Chie, and later Rise Kujikawa using the new—incorrect—phrase he learns from Yukiko's Shadow.
Teddie eventually gains a human body and comes to the real world. He begins living with Yosuke's family and participating in everyday life outside the TV. He works part-time job at Junes with Yosuke, goes by the alias Kumada, and gets hooked on vanilla ice cream bars. "Topsicles" in the English localization. As Teddie gets to know the group, he wonders about his purpose and identity. These topics become the core of the bond between him and the protagonist, whom he confides in and starts calling sensei.
Teddie appears as a white, blue, and red colored bear mascot with a large zipper around his head. In July, he gains a human body and starts walking around the real world as a blonde haired blue-eyed boy dressed in clothes that Chie and Yukiko pick for him at Junes.

Trivia
- For Teddie's design, Hashino requested he be cute and loveable. Based on Hashino's thought that "cute" would be big, fluffy, and accepting, Soejima went with a bear that resembles vintage toys such as Kewpie dolls. Soejima intentionally made Teddie look like he is already outdated with the color palette and the buttons that get smaller. Teddie's head was inspired by the look of an astronaut helmet as a type of retrofuturism and throwback to the Showa era when people were more hopeful. Originally, Atlus thought it would be surprising if Teddie were a beautiful woman inside of the bear suit. But after switching Naoto Shirogane from a boy to a girl, they decided to make Teddie a guy instead, and he ended up with his pretty blonde hair and blue-eyed look.[2]
- In his Yasogami High social media profile in the 2009 setting book, Persona Club P4, Teddie fills out his profile with joking responses and emoji. His gender is "A bear who lives for a woman's love". His favorite food is sweets, but even more than sweets, he loves sweet, cute girls. His special skill is using his nose to detect people, he dislikes people who disturb his hibernation, and he does not have patience in his vocabulary. The social clubs he has joined are the "Risette Fan Club", "Gothic Lolita Fashion", "Yakitori", and "[Polar] Bear Lovers [Sun Bear]". His inbox has a message from Nori-P (Noriko Kashiwagi) asking him out on a date.[3]
Nomenclature
Language | Name | Meaning |
---|---|---|
Japanese | クマ Kuma 熊田 Kumada |
Kuma (lit. "Bear") Kumada (Play on his name being "Kuma", the Japanese informal copula "da", and the Japanese surname "Kumada") In the English game, the line was changed to a customer in Junes mistaking him as saying his name was Terry or Eddie. |

Notes
- ↑ Yukiko's Shadow uses the Japanese phrase specifically for "girls hitting on guys", 逆ナン (gyakunan). Chie repeats this word when quoting what the shadow says, and Teddie in turn picks it up from Chie repeating Yukiko's Shadow. In the English version, this was localized as "scoring a stud" early in the game, but only as "scoring" whenever Teddie begins repeating it later on, thus obfuscating that he is repeating Yukiko's Shadow and using the wrong gendered phrase.
