Goro Akechi is a third-year high school student and talented detective. Despite his youth, Akechi quickly rises to fame as the "Second Detective Prince," achieving celebrity status for his intelligence and charm. A young man of conviction, well-mannered, and affable, he investigates the [[psychotic breakdowns]] and [[mental shutdowns]] alongside [[Sae Niijima]], which leads him to oppose the [[Phantom Thieves of Hearts]]. His public image as a charismatic and well-mannered young man masks a more complex and conflicted personality.

While Akechi is the second playable character to appear in the game post-intro, alongside [[Sae Niijima]] on 4/10, the Phantom Thieves—Joker, Ryuji, Ann and Morgana—don't directly encounter him until 6/9, during the Social Studies visit to a TV studio in Akasaka. He eavesdrops on them in the corridor before trying to ingratiate himself. The next day, on 6/10, the Thieves watch a filming of ''Good Morning Japan'', where Akechi sets out his public platform: the Phantom Thieves likely don't exist, but if they do, should be tried in a court of law for their crimes, since ''"you should never forcefully change a person's heart"''. After the filming, he approaches Joker, who exchanged words with him during filming, and asks if they can continue exchanging thoughts. This unlocks Akechi's confidant.

Akechi continues to appear over the following months, apparently investigating the [[mental shutdowns]] and [[psychotic breakdowns]] alongside Sae. His investigation focuses more and more on the Phantom Thieves, culminating in his blackmail of them on 10/26 at the [[Shujin Academy|Shujin]] culture festival, when he produces photographs of them exiting the [[Metaverse]], and reveals that he has [[Persona]] power of his own. He proposes joining the team for one mission, to change the heart of Sae Niijima, after which the Phantom Thieves will disband.

Left with no choice, the Thieves accept this deal. On 10/29, Akechi joins the party with the codename "Crow", using the Persona [[Robin Hood]], and participates in the [[Sae's Palace]] mission. At its climax, after [[Shadow Sae]]'s defeat, the events of the game's intro replay: Joker escapes from a casino, loot in hand, only to be stopped and arrested by the police. His interrogation proceeds as in the intro, concluding when Akechi arrives in the interrogation room with him, revealing himself as the traitor Joker was told of at his arrest, and as part of the grand conspiracy the Thieves have suspected exists. While he then appears to assassinate Joker with a gunshot to the head, Joker survives through the efforts of the Phantom Thieves.

It transpires that Akechi's ability to hear Morgana marked him as suspicious right away on 6/9, the first time he and the Thieves met, when he remarked on Morgana's mention of ''"delicious pancakes"''. Since only Persona users who've heard Morgana speak in the Metaverse can understand him in the real world as a cat, this tells the Thieves that Akechi has not only been into the Metaverse, but has seen them there. He inadvertently underscores this during his blackmail attempt on 10/26, when he claims to hear Morgana speak for the first time, and to have awoken only on 9/15, during the Thieves' first entry to [[Okumura's Palace]].

====Shido's Palace====
Akechi does not suspect Joker's survival until the events of [[Shido's Palace]]. Shido's behaviour becomes increasingly erratic as the Thieves progress through his Palace; eventually, while on the phone to him, Akechi realises that the Thieves are in the Palace and that Joker must be alive. He heads there at speed, ambushing them in the Palace's engine room.

During his boss fight, Akechi reveals that he's Shido's illegitimate son (隠し子 ''kakushigo'', literally "hidden child"—the sometimes-unacknowledged child of a prominent person who is concealed from public view). His mother was Shido's mistress<ref>{{Cite Game | quote='''明智吾郎'''「俺の母親は、悪い男の愛人だったって。」| translquote='''Akechi:''' ''"I told you my mother was the mistress of a good-for-nothing man."'' She died when Akechi was still young; he blames Shido for this, as well as his own birth. He confirms that he is the "true culprit" responsible for the mental shutdowns and psychotic breakdowns, including the murders of [[Wakaba Isshiki]] and [[Kunikazu Okumura]], as well as the devastating subway train crash on 4/10 and many other events that have terrorised Tokyo for the whole of the game.

In an effort to conclude his fight with Joker and clear the way to his revenge, he turns on the Phantom Thieves, intending to kill them all—yet when he fails, he's met with grace and understanding, and an offer of a second chance, to fight Shido alongside them. But because Shido is aware of Akechi's intentions, he has one last line of defence against him—a [[Cognitive Akechi|cognition of Akechi himself]], that appears at the moment Akechi appears to change sides. The cognition implies that Shido knew Akechi was his son, revealing that Shido knew Akechi wanted his attention and even his love. It seemingly offers Akechi one last chance to gain those things, by killing Joker and the Thieves after all. Instead, Akechi shoots the cognition, bringing down a bulkhead door between it and the Thieves—with himself on the wrong side. His fate is unclear; he asks Joker to ''"end Shido's crimes in [his] stead"'', before two gunshots are heard and his life signs vanish from [[Futaba Sakura|Futaba's]] awareness.

====Akechi's plan====
Akechi intends to take revenge on Shido, casting him into a ''"living hell"'', controlling him, and becoming greater than him, a plan [[Yusuke Kitagawa]] describes as ''"distorted"''. To that end, he approached Shido two years before canon, saying he had ''"special powers"'' and offering his services; his first assignment was to stop several of Shido's political opponents who were conspiring against him within the Diet, by giving them psychotic breakdowns—caused by [[Call of Chaos]], Akechi's unique ability, ''"the ability to control and drive others mad ... born from within his heart"''.

His first murder assignment appears to be Wakaba Isshiki, Futaba's mother, killed in an effort to steal and conceal her [[cognitive psience]] research; this takes place approximately three months after he enters Shido's service. He continues to cause ''"accidents and scandals"'' using Call of Chaos (referred to as psychotic breakdowns), and murders and brain death (referred to as mental shutdowns) until at least 11/20. After his apparent death in Shido's Palace, these events never recur.

Akechi gets his name from Japanese mystery writer {{Wp|Edogawa Ranpo}}'s fictional detective {{Wp|Kogoro Akechi}}, who was heavily based on Sherlock Holmes. Their first major target is [[Suguru Kamoshida]], a corrupt volleyball coach using his fame a notoriety to abuse students. After accidentally entering Kamoshida's palace, [[Ren Amamiya]] and [[Ryuji Sakamoto]] meet [[Morgana]] and decide to change Kamoshida's heart by stealing his desires. Following the suicide attempt of [[Shiho Suzui]], [[Ann Takamaki]] joins the group. Upon reaching his treasure, Ryuji sends out the first calling card by posting it around Shujin. The following day, they successfully take Kamoshida's desires leading to his confession. After the confession, The group celebrate at a high class restaurant where they were officially form the Phantom Thieves of Hearts. Shortly after this, [[Yuuki Mishima]] created the [[Phantom Aficionado Website]], where people could make requests to the phantom thieves of to change more hearts.

The group's second target is [[Ichiryusai Madarame]], an artist who was taking credit for the work of his students. They first take notice of Madarame after he is mentioned by a shadow in Mementos and shortly after , meet [[Yusuke Kitagawa]], one of his students. As they explore his palace, they are eventually joined by Yosuke after he discovers his teacher's true nature. Upon reaching the treasure, Yosuke creates the calling card and posts copies of it all around Madarame's art exhibition, After successfully stealing Madarame's desires, he makes a public confession on national television, getting national attention for the phantom thieves.

The group's third major target is [[Junya Kaneshiro]], a local mob boss blackmailing highschoolers into becoming drug mules. [[Makoto Niijima]], having been directed to investigate the phantom thieves by [[Kobayakawa]], discovers the identity of the thieves and attempt to use this knowledge to blackmail them into showing her their abilities. However, this attempt ends in Kaneshiro taking a picture of Makoto and the thieves inside his adult club and threatening to send the pictures to their school unless they paid him. This event encourages Makoto into joining the thieves as they steal Kaneshirou's desires. After reaching his treasure, the group posts calling cards all around Shibuya. After Kaneshiro's desires are stolen, his heart changes, leading to him turning himself in for his various crimes and the police deciding to keep an eye of the thieves.

The group's fourth Target is [[Futaba Sakura]], a hikkimori who agrees to help them deal with Medjed in exchange for them stealing her desires. Having gained wide scale attention, the Phantom thieves are targeted by [[Medjed]], a hacktivism group that threatens wide scale cyber attacks if the group doesn't reveal their identities and turn themselves in. At the same time, Ren is contacted by another hacker called Alibaba. Alibaba offers to help the Phantom Thieves deal with Medjed under the condition that they change the heart of Futaba Sakura. While investigating Futuba, they discover her backstory from [[Sojiro Sakura|Sojiro]] and that she herself is Alibaba. With the information the thieves enter her palace and work to change her heart, giving her her calling card in person. After her heart is changed, Futuba goes into a several day long sleep, but awakened in time to counter Medjed's attack. Armed with a proper understanding what truly happened to her mother, Futuba decides to joint he Phantom Thieves in order to bring those who killed her mother and stole her research to justice.

The group's fifth major target is [[Kunizaku Okumura]], the CEO of a fast food chain who overworks his workers. The Thieves decide to target Okumura after repeated calls to action on the Phansite. Before they can properly explore the palace an argument between Ryuji and Morgana leads to Morgana leaving the team and trying to completely Okumura's palace alone. He is unsuccessful in the attempt, but manages to meet Kunizaku's daughter [[Haru Okumura|Haru]], convincing her to join him in his endeavor. When the other phantom thieves attempt to infiltrate the palace, they are interrupted by Mona and Noir, who refuse to work with them before they all all forced to flee the palace. The phantom thieves once again try to track down Mona and Noir in Mementos, but the two again refuse to listen to them before leaving. After a confrontation with Haru's fiancé, [[Sugimura]], Morgana rejoins the group and Haru joins in order to change her father's blackened heart. Upon reaching the Okumura's treasure, Haru sends the her father a calling card by placing it in their home. The group manages to successfully take Okumura's treasure and goes to Destiny land to celebrate. During their celebration, Okumura's confession is livestreamed, however, in the middle of his confession, Kunizaku suddenly dies. The Phantom Thieves are then blamed for his death, causing the public opinion f them to start falling.

The group's sixth target is [[Sae Niijima]] a prosecutor from the district attorney's office that was pursuing their case. [[Goro Akechi]], having figured out the identities of the Phantom thieves offers to keep their identities a secret under the condition that they change the heart of Sae Nijiima, Makoto's sister. The group agrees and Akechi joins them as they infiltrate her palace. While the group meets several roadblock's Akechi's quick thinking allows them to prevail and capture the treasure. However, before they can escape, police officers enter the palace and surround the building. Joker offers to act as a distraction so the rest of the thieves can escape, leading to his own capture. In the interrogation room , Joker is abused and forced to sign a confession. Sae Nijiima then arrives and demands to speak with him, leading to Joker recalling the events of the game to her. Joker manages to discreetly give her enough information for her to realize that Akechi is the traitor and she uses Joker's phone to send Akechi to the her palace and trick him into killing a cognitive Joker instead of the real one. Sae then sneaks Joker out of the police headquarters and bring him to [[Leblanc]].

The group's seventh target is [[Masayoshi Shido]], a corrupt politician who uses his influence to walk over those with less power them himself. After seeing on of Shido's campaign speeches, Joker realizes that Shido was the person who framed him for assaults. Learning that he is the person behind Akechi's actions, the thieves infiltrate his palace to change his heart. To reach his treasure, the thieves acquire 5 letters of recommendation, but upon acquiring the last letter, they are cornered by Akechi, who reveals himself as the Black Mask and challenges them. Akechi is defeated but Shido's cognitive Akechi arrives, mocking Akechi for their naivety and revealing that Shido planned to get rid of Akechi later on. Realizing that he had been used the whole time, Akechi puts up a barrier between himself and his cognitive version and the phantom thieves. He getting in a final stand off with with cognitive self and seemingly dies in the encounter. The phantom thieves proceed to issue a calling card by taking over multiple massive television screens all across Shibuya and publicly challenging Shido. The following day, the phantonm thieves successfully defeat Samael and steal his desires, but before his heart changes, Shido attempts to temporarily kill himself in order to collapse his palace and kill the phantom thieves. Thanks to Ryuji, the thieves manage to escape and the following day Shido confesses for his crimes.

The group's final target was collective desires Tokyo itself, which had been overrun by a sense of apathy. Despite Shido's confession, public opinion about seems to have remained unchanged. Wanting to break to break the public's apathy, the thieves go to the depths of [[Mementos]] in order to steal its treasure, the holy grail. The following day, they successfully take Kamoshida's desires leading to his confession. However, this attempt ends in Kaneshiro taking a picture of Makoto and the thieves inside his adult club and threatening to send the pictures to their school unless they paid him. This event encourages Makoto into joining the thieves as they steal Kaneshirou's desires. After reaching his treasure, the group posts calling cards all around Shibuya. After Kaneshiro's desires are stolen, his heart changes, leading to him turning himself in for his various crimes and the police deciding to keep an eye of the thieves.

At the same time, Ren is contacted by another hacker called Alibaba. Alibaba offers to help the Phantom Thieves deal with Medjed under the condition that they change the heart of Futaba Sakura. While investigating Futuba, they discover her backstory from [[Sojiro Sakura|Sojiro]] and that she herself is Alibaba. With the information the thieves enter her palace and work to change her heart, giving her her calling card in person. After her heart is changed, Futuba goes into a several day long sleep, but awakened in time to counter Medjed's attack. Armed with a proper understanding what truly happened to her mother, Futuba decides to joint he Phantom Thieves in order to bring those who killed her mother and stole her research to justice.

In the interrogation room , Joker is abused and forced to sign a confession. Sae Nijiima then arrives and demands to speak with him, leading to Joker recalling the events of the game to her. Joker manages to discreetly give her enough information for her to realize that Akechi is the traitor and she uses Joker's phone to send Akechi to the her palace and trick him into killing a cognitive Joker instead of the real one. Sae then sneaks Joker out of the police headquarters and bring him to [[Leblanc]].

After seeing on of Shido's campaign speeches, Joker realizes that Shido was the person who framed him for assaults. To reach his treasure, the thieves acquire 5 letters of recommendation, but upon acquiring the last letter, they are cornered by Akechi, who reveals himself as the Black Mask and challenges them. Akechi is defeated but Shido's cognitive Akechi arrives, mocking Akechi for their naivety and revealing that Shido planned to get rid of Akechi later on. Realizing that he had been used the whole time, Akechi puts up a barrier between himself and his cognitive version and the phantom thieves. He getting in a final stand off with with cognitive self and seemingly dies in the encounter. The phantom thieves proceed to issue a calling card by taking over multiple massive television screens all across Shibuya and publicly challenging Shido. The following day, the phantonm thieves successfully defeat Samael and steal his desires, but before his heart changes, Shido attempts to temporarily kill himself in order to collapse his palace and kill the phantom thieves. Thanks to Ryuji, the thieves manage to escape and the following day Shido confesses for his crimes.

===Design===
As a major recurring character in the series, Lucifer has received multiple designs. His first design is that of a beautiful man with flowing blonde hair wearing nothing but a white cloth or ribbon wrapped around his body. He has three pairs of white angel wings, long thin horns pointing outwards, and is depicted with his eyes closed. This design is primarily seen in early games in the franchise, and when in games with multiple Lucifer designs, this one is typically referred to as Helel.

The second design acts as an inversion of the first design, retaining the three pairs of wings, horns, white cloth, and blonde hair, however altered into a more demonic form. Rather than a beautiful man, Lucifer is a monstrous man with blue-green skin and ridges across his body, as well as spikes protruding from his forearms and around his neck like a collar. His wings are bat-like and demonic, with a crimson inner membrane while the rest of the wing is the same color as the rest of his body. His horns point upwards, and his long blonde hair is slicked back as well as on his cheeks as sideburns. His eyes are pure red, and his face is always contorted into a scowl. This is the default design used for Lucifer throughout the series, having appeared in many series and spin offs.

In [[Shin Megami Tensei IV|''Shin Megami Tensei IV'']], Lucifer was designed by guest artist [[Yasushi Nirasawa]]. This design was a significant departure from prior depictions of Lucifer, being a tall, thin and bald alien-like creature with extremely pale skin. He wears a long sleeved shirt that exposes his chest, a corset around his waist with multiple belts, tight pants, and strapped boots, all golden and marked with intricate patterns. His eyes are bulbous and black, and while his right arm loosely fits his shirt his left arm is exposes, as it has a massive tumor in the forearm that twitches and pulses, and is contained by metal restraints. This design was altered for [[Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse|''Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse'']] by [[Masayuki Doi]], changing his skin to dark grey and glowing red eyes that no longer bulged out of his head. In addition, he was seated on a throne with twelve rays of light stretching out from the center in reference to his wings.

His second form, also designed by Yasushi Nirasawa, is much more demonic. All his clothing is replaced with golden scales, and he grows six pairs of golden demon wings, two from his back and the last from his lower legs. His head, chest, and hands keep their pale color, however they have all changed shape; his head is no longer has eyes and has a pair of golden horns curved downwards, his chest has scales similar to the rest of his body, and his hands have grown longer with various claws attached to them. The tumor in his left arm has hatched into a deformed humanoid entity, with two arms and four insect like legs reaching out and it's face having blank eyes and baring its teeth. Around it's neck it wears a blue scarf, signifying that this deformed entity is what remains of [[Walter]].

In ''[[Shin Megami Tensei V]]'', Lucifer initially appears in his traditional demonic form before transforming into a new ascended form for the final battle. This design incorporates aspects of the Helel and demonic forms, as well as aspects from [[YHVH]]. His body is made of white metal accented with gold rather than flesh, combining sharp angles and smooth surfaces. The upwards and outwards pointing horns of his previously mentioned forms are combined in the form of a crowned helmet, with his blonde hair now made of gold going down to his chest in two long strips of metal. His arms and legs are mechanical, with his shoulders being segmented from his chest and pointed, and his forearms have armor that extends from beyond the elbow to the wrist. His legs do not have feet, instead being pointed from the knees down. He has twelve wings of golden metal, eight at his back pointing upwards and resembling a sun, two wrapped around his waist, and two attached to his legs. His face is statuesque with the golden eyes of a [[Nahobino (Gods)|Nahobino]]. When in his second phase, all white coloration turns to black, with all other aspects of his design remaining identical.
