Tokyo is the capital city of Japan and serves as the primary setting of Game and Game. The protagonist navigates daily life by traveling via the Tokyo Subway. While initially limited in scope to three locations, a total of twenty-three locations in Persona 5 and twenty-five locations in Persona 5 Royal can be unlocked via plot progression, ranking up Confidants, or reading books.

A commuter pass provides free travel between Yongen-Jaya, Shibuya, and Aoyama-Itchome, which are the initial three explorable locations. Other locations must be unlocked via game progression and require purchasing a ticket to travel there, which is typically a few hundred yen in each direction. If the protagonist's wallet is empty, only travel along the commuter pass route is possible.

Once a location has been added to the map, it is possible to fast travel between explorable locations as well as many sub-areas within Shibuya, Yongen-Jaya, Shinjuku, Kichijoji, and Akihabara. Nine locations can be visited anytime to explore or shop once they have been revealed, while most other locations are available only during plot events or by taking a Confidant to hang out together. These locations are grayed out on the map when the conditions to visit are not met.

While Persona 5 Royal includes all locations from Persona 5, the hangout locations of Shinagawa and Nakano are exclusive to the expansion.
Yongen-Jaya
Yongen-Jaya
Yongen-Jaya is the new home of the protagonist and includes a medical clinic, movie theater, and several shops. Many NPCs around the backstreets have conversations that can be eavesdropped on, which change over the course of game plot events.
Shibuya
Shibuya (Persona 5)
Shibuya is the transfer point between home and school, with numerous Confidants, shops, daily activities, and several locations in the Metaverse. A number of sub-areas can be explored around the Shibiya station, and the Velvet Room can be first accessed from Shibuya's Central St.
Aoyama-Itchome
Shujin Academy
Primarily a commercial area, Shujin Academy is situated close to the Aoyama-Itchome station between a number of high-rise buildings and businesses. Beyond the train station exit and a vending machine on the path to school, Shujin Academy is the only location of note. It is host to several vending machines, a small food store, multiple Confidants, and the first Palace. Many NPCs in the school have conversations that can be eavesdropped on, which change over the course of game plot events.
Shinjuku
Shinjuku (Persona 5)
Heavily geared toward entertainment, the explorable section of Shinjuku is in the Red-Light District and includes a movie theater and the Crossroads Bar. Multiple Confidants and a few specialty shops can be found in the evenings, but the area is much quieter in the afternoons. Several NPCs have changing dialogue over the course of the game with commentary on ongoing events.
Akihabara
Ichigaya
Ichigaya (Persona 5)
The fishing spot in Ichigaya becomes available via reading Fishpond Spotter or accepting Ryuji Sakamoto's hangout invitation on 7/6P5 or 7/3P5R.
Jinbocho
Kanda Church
Kanda Church is a single-area location that hosts the Star Arcana Confidant, a confessional booth that allows party members to relearn old skills, and a 'donation rewards' shop that is available on Sundays.
Inokashira Park
Inokashira Park is the only area of Kichijoji accessible in Persona 5. A natural hideaway from the big city, the park has a lake with rowboats and many walking paths through forested areas. Several rank-ups for the Lovers Confidant and one for the Emperor Confidant occur here.
Akasaka Mitsuke
Shuffle Time is a game mechanic in all versions of Game and Game. Shuffle Time occurs after battles occasionally, and is one of the main ways to obtain Personas, along with fusion. The exact mechanics differ between installments.

Mechanics
Game
Shuffle Time is introduced in Persona 3 and works about the same in the original game, game, and game. The player is shown five cards and then the cards are turned over and moved around on the screen. The cards can be a new Persona, a blank card, or a card representing one of the four Minor Arcana suits (Sword, Wand, Cup, and Coin). Minor Arcana cards have different levels, and the level is higher the further the player is in Tartarus; the higher the level, the more substantial the reward. The Sword gives a weapon, the Wand increases experience, the Cup restores HP, and the Coin gives money.

Occasionally, the player has the chance to double up after selecting the card. If the player accepts, then they enter another Shuffle Time, and can get multiple cards in the same battle this way. However, if a blank card is picked, then the player will obtain no cards after that battle.

Sometimes, cards can be cursed. This is represented by a skull-and-crossbones overlaid on the card's face. If a cursed card is selected, it will reduce the time for the Reaper to appear.

Persona 3 Portable introduces a new Shuffle Time variant where the cards are constantly revolving around and the player will select whatever is in the center of the screen at the time the button is pressed.

Game
Shuffle time is expanded upon in Persona 4. Unlike in Persona 3, Minor Arcana cards cannot be drawn and only three types of cards exist.

* Persona card: The card depicts a certain Persona. When drawn, the player receives the depicted Persona. The Persona is not received if its level is higher than the main protagonist's.
* Blank card: This card is marked with a shattered glass effect. When drawn, the player receives nothing other than the experience points and money gained normally.
* Penalty card: This card is marked with a white cross pattern with red highlights. When drawn, the player does not receive a Persona, experience points, or money from the battle just won.

There are a number of variants added in Persona 4, such as a Concentration-like matching minigame, and a slot machine-like minigame where the player must stop three rotating columns of cards.

Two additional mechanics can be triggered randomly when drawing a Persona or Blank card. The first, 1 More, allows the player to retry their luck at drawing a different card. The second, known as Arcana Chance transforms the card into a card of the Major Arcana. If the player chooses to proceed with Arcana Chance, they will either receive the Major Arcana card in the upright or reverse position. The associated effects of each are listed below.

Game
Shuffle time is simplified in Persona 4 Golden. Rather than a minigame where the player selects a face down card, all cards are shown face up and the player chooses to draw a card freely from those shown. Additionally, both Minor and Major Arcana Cards can be drawn.

When entering Shuffle time, the player is given 1 try to draw a card. Certain cards are denoted as X more, with X being a number in the range of 1-4. When these cards are selected, the player is given that many more tries to draw cards.

When all cards have been drawn, a Sweep Bonus is activated. The Sweep Bonus grants a number of benefits:
* A Shuffle Time will always occur after winning the next battle.
* The next Shuffle Time will start with 3 tries instead of 1.
* Persona Cards that the player already possesses and cards with negative effects may be replaced with other, more beneficial cards.

Synopsis
In 2009, the protagonist, who was orphaned 10 years ago, transfers to Gekkoukan High School in Tatsumi Port Island. A few days after his arrival at Iwatodai Dormitory, Shadows attack during an abnormal period of time known as the Dark Hour: A hidden 25th hour after midnight. During this attack, the protagonist awakens his persona, Orpheus, and successfully defeats the shadow. He is subsequently recruited to the Specialized Extracurricular Execution Squad (S.E.E.S.) by his dormmates, who are themselves persona users who aim to end the Dark Hour phenomenon. With the protagonist now a part of their team, S.E.E.S. is able to start a thorough investigation into the Dark Hour, starting with the massive tower, Tartarus, which materialises on the site of Gekkoukan High School during it. Unusually powerful shadows known as the Arcana Shadows also begin to materialize every full moon to terrorize the city, the elimination of which S.E.E.S. believes will end the Dark Hour. The protagonist begins his life at Gekkoukan High, befriending and strengthening his bonds with the various people he meets. At the same time, he starts to search for further answers alongside his teammates in S.E.E.S. on the nature of shadows and the Dark Hour.
FES
Persona 3 FES
Persona 3 FES is a rerelease of PAGENAME with a variety of additional features and changes to the game, including a new playable epilogue named The Answer (Episode Aegis in the Japanese release). Differences include:
* A new Hard difficulty which is selectable upon starting a new game.
* New story events, including security camera footage featuring each member of Iwatodai Dormitory (and by extension, SEES) and nighttime walks with Koromaru.
* New personas have been added. These include Slime, Hua Po, Hecatoncheires, and Rakshasa, among others.
* The protagonist can now fuse weapons using personas at the Shinshoudo Antiques store at Paulownia Mall.
* A new Arcana, the Aeon, has been added, represented by the character Aigis. A corresponding Social Link has also been added regarding Aigis.
* New events in the form of special quests given by Elizabeth, where the protagonist is asked to take Elizabeth with him to specific locales.
* An alternative method to improving Social Link progress has been added via the fortune draw at Naganaki Shrine.
* The Answer, a new playable epilogue which takes place after the events of PAGENAME starring Aigis as the main character.
Portable
Persona 3 PortablePersona 3 Portable is a rerelease of PAGENAME for the PlayStation Portable (PSP). The game introduces a variety of features and changes to the main game. Differences include:

* Two new additional difficulty options, Beginner and Maniac, have been added and can be changed to and from at any point in the game.
* Navigation outside of Tartarus has been changed to use an isometric 2-dimensional menu-based style as compared to the original's 3D movement. Characters are rendered as sprites.
* The 2D animated cutscenes and a majority of in-engine 3D cutscenes of the original have been replaced with equivalent visual-novel like scenes, with some particular scenes being portrayed as new 3D cutscenes.
* A new female protagonist option can be selected when started a new game. The female protagonist version of the story is considered an alternate continuity and has significant differences, such as being able to select a new male Velvet Room resident, Theodore, new dialogue options, new Social Links that were unavailable to the original protagonist such as with the male SEES members, and many more.
** New music has been added which only plays when the female protagonist has been selected, such as new battle music.
* The battle system has been changed to more closely reflect the system in Game. This includes a "Direct Commands" tactic allowing for direct control of all party member actions, the replacement of the "Wait" command with "Defense", and characters no longer needing to spend a turn to get up from a "Downed" state.
* Fusion Spells are now activated through the usage of items instead of being activated as a skill when both required personas are in the protagonist's possession.
* The protagonist can now only utilize one weapon type (one-handed swords for the male protagonist, and naginatas for the female protagonist), in contrast to the original where any weapon type could be equipped.
* The addition of a notice board in front of the Paulownia Mall Police Station, which lists people who have gone missing in Tartarus. The protagonist can find and rescue these people when exploring Tartarus for various rewards.
Yasogami High School is one of the main settings of the story of Persona 4. The protagonist transfers to this school as a second year due to his temporary stay in Inaba for a year.

Yasogami High School schedules several school events throughout the year. This includes a school camping trip in June, A school field trip scheduled in September, and a school culture festival held in October. In 2011, during the events of Persona 4, the school visits Gekkoukan High School and the surrounding Tatsumi Port Island area as part of its field trip.

When the Fog from the TV World starts entering the real world near the climax of the game, the faculty and students at Yasogami High School are also affected, with rumors of students falling ill and even fainting.
With the protagonist now a part of their team, SEES is able to start a thorough investigation into the Dark Hour, starting with the massive tower, Tartarus, which materialises on the site of Gekkoukan High School during it. Unusually powerful shadows known as the Arcana Shadows also begin to materialize every full moon to terrorize the city, the elimination of which SEES believes will end the Dark Hour. The protagonist begins his life at Gekkoukan High, befriending and strengthening his bonds with the various people he meets. At the same time, he starts to search for further answers alongside his teammates in SEES on the nature of shadows and the Dark Hour.
